James joined 354 (Dover) Squadron in 2002. James rose through the ranks and in 2005 was promoted to Cadet Flight Sergeant. During his time James achieved his Silver Gliding Scholarship Wings, and he attended many RAF Base Camps at RAF Brize Norton, and RAF Lyneham.

In 2006 James became a civilian instructor but left in 2008. James decided to rejoin in 2010 as a civilian; in 2011 James became a Sergeant RAFAC. During that time James has completed his Basic Expedition Leaders Award and become the Squadron Duke of Edinburgh Award Officer.  In 2020 Sgt Hutchison took on the role as SNCO Drill and Discipline.
